I'm so glad I found your Substack! This touches on so many things that interest me deeply. I have just started a genealogy Substack (about my own beloved and complicated family roots) so I am finding lots of inspiration here. Thank you :)

I would have sworn that phrase, "teeth set on edge," was a modern and upper-class one, which never filtered into any Bible passages I ever saw or read. Wonder what it meant in Hebrew, rather than KJV?

Well Maud, you've done the impossible: come up with a Bible verse I've never heard of before. I grew up in a small church school with KJV Bible classes every day, but never heard "children's teeth set on edge." Sour grapes, yes; sins of the father, yes; but not altogether in one verse. Having read Boy Erased so long ago, I confess I hadn't realized it had been made into a film. So I recently found it and screened it and feel ready to dive into his new novel.. Such compelling storytelling and great writing from an exvangelical narrator.
