Under ordinary circumstances, living across the street from the woodlands of Forest Park in New York City is a balm. Right now, though, the trees are parched and vulnerable—and, with my proximity to them, so am I.
I came here from a link by AHP, and was touched to discover that you and I are neighbors. I also live near Forest Park and walk and run its roads and trails. I would love to be involved in its restoration.
I’m also post-Mormonism and relate so much to your other religion related thoughts.
These two things are very much making me feel some joy in community. Thank you.
Jo, how wonderful—thanks for sharing all of this. I did some restoration events in the park that were listed on the Parks site and then signed up for Super Steward training. I really recommend doing it if you can!
Like Jo, I came to this piece from a link by AHP—so glad I did. And thankful to have found your writing, Maud. I’m an ex-evangelical living in Brooklyn, and my non-day-jobbing work is taking kids out into urban nature. Your take here held so much meaning for me. I look forward to reading more of your work.
Such a beautiful essay Maud. And a beautiful example of relating to nature as a city dweller. I’m so grateful you shared this now as fires affect the area. Thank you for helping steward this land. 💓🫶🏾💓
You are welcome. We all are in the soup together. Some are reaching out to others. I don't have to tell you about some other factions. I think many people feel a bit paralyzed by the pervasive right wing Christian evangelical tide. I believe that much of it stems from the collective unconscious that knows no boundaries between countries. Like George Carlin said: "In America we have front row seats to the circus".

Stacy, I'm so glad to be in touch here and I'm looking forward to reaching your thoughts on urban nature.

Thank you, dear Sebene!
I've been thinking of you with respect to the NY and NJ fires. I'm glad you are safe (for now, anyway).
Thank you, Beth!
Chief Seattle once said that when the all the great mammals are gone from the earth mankind will experience a great loneliness of the spirit
Thank you for sharing this.
